Subject: German correspondent challenges media stereotypes about Russia

Dear David,

JRL readers interested in alternative assessments of the media's coverage of Russia may wish to take note of a very provocative article by Gabriele Krone-Schmalz in today's "Rheinischer Merkur." Ms. Krone-Schmalz was Moscow correspondent for ARD, Gemany's channel one, from 1987-1991.

The storyline reads: "Is Putin another dictator? No, says the former Moscow correspondent for ARD. The President is popular with the people because represents the possibility of success in this enormous land. The West shows too little understanding for the Kremlin's policies."
