WAR DANGER LEVEL IS NOT HIGH FOR RUSSIA

MOSCOW, MARCH 30, 2004. (RIA Novosti). The level of war danger for Russia is not high at the current stage, believes the Council for Foreign and Defence Policy under the country's president. On Tuesday, the Council presented its report "The Military Development and Modernization of Russia's Armed Forces" at the RIA Novosti press centre.

"No one of the existing conflict situations with the use of force directly threatens Russia's security," the report says.

Replying to journalists' question whether NATO eastward expansion threatens Russia, head of the Council Sergei Karaganov said the threat was out of question.

"NATO does not have a group of forces which would be dangerous for Russia", the well-known Russian political scientist said. He is of the opinion that NATO expansion is rather a political than a military issue.
