PRESIDENT PUTIN AGAINST INTERFERENCE WITH SMALL BUSINESSES

STARAYA LADOGA, Leningrad Region, July 17, (from a RIA Novosti correspondent) -- Vladimir Putin has criticised government bodies for interfering with small businesses' operation.

"There are even more administrative barriers at the local level that at the federal one. Dues have to be paid for every step, it's extortion," the Russian president said at the meeting in Staraya Ladoga, Leningrad Region, on the development of Russia's towns.

"The local and regional governments' sluggishness" leads to impediments hampering the development of small businesses," the head of state went on to say. "But suppressing small businesses and inhibiting their development means a shortfall of the budget revenues, which could be spent on social needs," Putin said.

"The criteria of companies entitled to privileged taxation should be expanded," the head of state added.
