Russia's Yeltsin pays for Orthodox chapel at Kyrgyz presidential residence

An orthodox chapel and a mosque have been opened at the Kyrgyz president's residence at Lake Issyk-Kul in eastern Kyrgyzstan, the Kyrgyz AKIpress news agency reported on 14 July.

The news agency said that Kyrgyz President Askar Akayev and the former Russian president, Boris Yeltsin, and their spouses attended the opening ceremony of the chapel and mosque held at the Manas Ordo complex of the Cholpon-Ata residence at the lake on 12 July.

Akayev said that Yeltsin had initiated the construction of the chapel from his own funds, the news agency said.

The former Russian president said that Kyrgyzstan was a democratic country which was successfully developing its economic, cultural and political potential, the news agency said.
