RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES SUMS UP YEAR'S RESULTS

MOSCOW, May 19, 2003. /From RIA Novosti correspondent Lyubov Sobolevskaya/ -- On Monday the Russian Academy of Sciences opened its annual general meeting in Moscow to sum up the results achieved by Russian science over last year.

The Academy President Yuri Osipov in his speech quoted an impressive list of Russian scientific achievements in different spheres. They include a new phenomenon discovered at the Academy's Physical Technical Institute, St.Petersburg, the transformation of spin in electric current in nano-structures.

The President pointed to the achievements of the Russian science in ensuring safe functioning of nuclear power plants, ways of processing natural gas into ecological fuel and high-octane petrol. He also spoke on the scientists' contribution to working out the country's oil and gas strategy, creating comprehensive maps of Russia's seismic zoning using a unique method.

The academician told the audience about the neuro-protectors for stimulating memory, new remedies for cardiology and ophthalmology made of Far-Eastern seafood, new medications for diagnosing and treating cancer, newest laser sets for surgery created by the Academy's scientists.

Among the achievements in social studies Osipov noted the worked out macro-civilization theory with suggested scenarios for Russia's development, the fundamental 4-volume work "World Wars of the 20th century", which is unique for world historical literature.

The present session will hold elections of new active and associate members of the Academy.

The general meeting will last till May 22nd.
