US ambassador concerned at independent TV's fate in Russia
Interfax
Vladivostok, 3 December: The US Department of State is somewhat worried over the TV6 [television station] situation, US ambassador to Russia Alexander Vershbow told a news conference in Vladivostok today.

A truly independent voice could be silenced as a result of this dispute, Vershbow said. He expressed the hope, however, that the dispute would be resolved without interference of political forces and the channel would not be closed.

The United States wants independent media to consolidate in Russia because they promote stable development in economy and politics, Vershbow said. It is also important that Russian regional media be also independent and not subjected to political pressure, he said.

Vershbow arrived in Vladivostok from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk on Saturday in the course of his first tour of Russia. He flew to Yekaterinburg today.
