Russia: Last Soviet leader full of praise for Putin
Interfax

Moscow, 23 November: Former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev has highly assessed Russian President Vladimir Putin's latest international initiatives.

"The West has not yet fully realized all the suggestions that the Russian president has made," Gorbachev said at a congress of the United Social Democratic Party in Moscow. Gorbachev heads the party.

The international community succeeded in joining forces to fight terrorism after the tragedy of 11 September. "This unification grew into a tendency for cooperation in forming a new world order," he said.

Regarding the Civil Forum that was recently held in Moscow, Gorbachev urged regions to "follow suit".

"The authorities should meet people and communicate with them," he said.

Gorbachev stressed the importance of Putin's initiative for the adoption of a law on political parties. The first Russian president Boris Yeltsin's "objective was to keep up a manageable chaos and we know how that ended," he said.
