Russia to export anthrax-killing postal equipment to
US ITAR-TASS

Moscow, 30 October: The Russian science sector will soon export to the US equipment for sterilization of letters at post offices.

The Russian Academy of Sciences Vice President Gennadiy Mesyats told ITAR-TASS on Tuesday [30 October] that a "big contract" is in the making these days.

"The Americans have contacted us immediately after the first case of anthrax spores detected in mail, as they recognize that our sterilization equipment is the best in the world," Mesyats said.

He said the equipment is a desktop facility which can instantly sterilize 200,000 letters.

Experiments with the "postal accelerator" are nearing completion and the contract will be signed soon, Mesyats said.

Similar equipment, designed at Novosibirsk Institute of Nuclear Physics, has been supplied to the US over the past six months. It is used for meat sterilization, he said.
