HEADLINES,

- Russian President Vladimir Putin chaired a meeting to discuss economic issues. Mikhail Kasyanov, Aleksandr Voloshin, Aleksei Kudrin, German Gref, Viktor Gerashchenko and Tatyana Paramonova were in attendance.

- The last echelon with technical equipment has left the Russian Gudauta base in Georgia. The 10th paratrooper division stationed there has been transferred to secure military objects in Abkhazia.

- Russian State Duma Speaker Gennady Seleznev met with a delegation of Georgian ministers of parliament to discuss the situation in Abkhazia. Seleznev's Georgian counterpart, Zurab Zhvania, explained that Georgia does not expect to solve the Abkhaz problem without Russia's participation; nor does Georgia insist that the Russian peacekeepers leave the territory immediately.

- Deputy Prime Minister Ilya Klebanov announced that Russia's defense-industry production will be concentrated in 50 special holdings.

- President Putin met with Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio, who is in Russia on an official visit. According to the Russian president, Russia and Portugal are actively coordinating efforts to improve contacts in all spheres. The Presidents also met with a wider group of government officials to discuss cooperation.

- The Russian and Portuguese first ladies, Ludmila Putina and Maria Jose Ritta, visited Moscow's School for the Applied Arts.

- President Putin signed the Land Code of the Russian Federation today.

- Yesterday evening, German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder telephoned President Putin. The leaders spoke about continuing regular consultations on the anti-terrorist operation and on the prospects of normalization and agreed to maintain a dialogue to closely coordinate actions.

- A powerful explosion destroyed a hearth in a metallurgy factory in Kamensk-Uralsk. Eight workers were seriously injured.

- Aleksandr Tselko has been appointed acting railways minister. Minister Nikolai Aksenenko has requested time off in connection with the investigation that was initiated against him.

- The seventh annual Russian Television Awards were held today. The ORT channel received 12 awards, RTR -- 5, and NTV, TV6, REN-TV, TVTs, "Kultura," "Yugra" (Khanty-mansiisk), Channel 4 (Yekaterinburg), "Afontovo" (Krasnoyarsk) and the National Association of television anchors received one award each.
