New Web Page Unveiled for Next Year's Census
The answers to the survey's 16 questions could yield surprising results

By Patricia Heffernan

A new web page, www.perepis2002.ru was unveiled on October 17, dedicated to the Russian census, which is scheduled to be launched on October 9, 2002, and run until October 16.

On October 9, 2002, according to the web page, census takers will get down to their principal task - surveying the population and ensuring that Russian citizens complete a questionnaire consisting of 16 questions.

Answers, apparently, will be accepted at face value, obviating the necessity to provide documental proof of their validity. The site notes that the census will allow the government to collect information on the number, structure and concentrations of the population throughout the Russian Federation.

Beyond that, census results are expected to indicate how the Russian population breaks down in terms of languages, nationalities, family status and education levels.

According to Major General Alexander Chekalin, who is overseeing security measures for the census, statistics concerning illegal migrants, and individuals not registered in their city of residence will also be taken. As Chekalin pointed out, "it is very important to realistically measure the scope of this problem, in order to introduce an effective migration policy, as well as to solve problems such as homelessness and unsupervised children".
