Strategy needed to counter extremism, Wahhabism - Kadyrov

Sochi, August 28, Interfax - A strategy must be drafted to counter religious extremism, Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov said.

Such strategy could be developed jointly with the North Caucasus clergy, the Federal Security Service and the Interior Ministry, Kadyrov said at a conference on ways to support Muslim religious organizations in the North Caucasus.

This could put a brake on the spreading of extremism and Wahhabism, with which dialogue is impossible and which must be dealt with radically, he said. "We are doing very little today to stop this process," Kadyrov said

The outflow of young people to the criminal armed groups is continuing, he said.

"We must try and find mistakes in what we are doing, and correct them. We must do all we can to win a spiritual victory," Kadyrov said.

On Islamic education, Kadyrov said that Islamic universities must not be closed, but they must be influenced into teaching religion correctly. Students seeking training abroad must be sent to countries free of Wahhabism, he said.

Extremists and terrorists are operating in Russia, "under Western special services' control," Kadyrov said. They are doing all they can to prevent domestic clergy from speaking, said Kadyrov.
