Russian General Staff denies use of cluster bombs during August conflict

MOSCOW. Jan 23 (Interfax) - The Russian Armed Forces' General Staff has denied claims that cluster bombs were allegedly used by Russian servicemen during the August operation in Georgia.

"These are unproved allegations that have repeatedly been voiced by the Georgian authorities. They have been denied on numerous occasions. I even do not want to respond to these attacks," Armed Forces General Staff deputy chief Col. Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsin told Interfax-AVN on Friday.

Human Rights Watch official Anna Neistat told an Interfax news conference on Friday that both Georgia and Russia used cluster bombs during the Georgian-South Ossetian conflict in August.

Georgia admitted to having used cluster bombs, but not in the areas where Human Rights Watch officials found them, Neistat said. The organization's employees discovered Georgian cluster bombs in Georgian villages, she said. It was either a miscalculated attack or a technical failure, she said, adding that Georgia used Israeli-made bombs.

Human Rights Watch officials found Russia's cluster bombs in a number of Georgian villages, Neistat said.
