Abkhazia wants to conclude military treaty with Russia
SUKHUMI. May 14 (Interfax) - Abkhazia is willing to conclude a military treaty with Russia similar to that existing between the U.S. and Taiwan, Abkhaz President Sergei Bagapsh said.
"Abkhazia will propose to Russia the signing of a military treaty that would guarantee security to our republic," Bagapsh told Interfax on Wednesday.
"We are also prepared to host Russian military bases on our territory within the framework of this treaty. I would like to emphasize that this would not go against the precedents already existing in international practice. For instance, this treaty could be analogous to the treaty between the U.S. and Taiwan," he said.
"But this is not our ultimate goal. Our goal is the recognition of Abkhazia's independence," Bagapsh said.
