Russia's Medvedev proposes transparency for courts
MOSCOW, December 2 (RIA Novosti) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev proposed on Tuesday drafting a law to ensure that Russian courts become more transparent.
Medvedev, a former lawyer, made the comments at the seventh All-Russian Congress of Judges, which last met four years ago, in Moscow.
"It is high time to draft a federal law, which would stipulate various methods of providing informational access to the work of the courts, including via the Internet," Medvedev said.
The president urged action to improve confidence in the country's legal system and an unbiased judiciary, adding that this issue concerned the "quality" of judges.
"This quality includes several factors: a good education, a high level of professionalism and an impeccable reputation. The majority of our judges possess these qualities," the president said.
Medvedev also announced an initiative to establish a single disciplinary body that will be responsible for the supervision of judges.
He also proposed simplifying the procedure for reappointing judges or assigning them indefinite terms of office.
"We could consider the issue of either simplifying the procedure to reappoint judges after the end of their three-year term or give up the procedure and appoint them indefinitely," Medvedev said.
