Extended presidential term to be effective for next Russian president - political analyst

MOSCOW. Nov 5 (Interfax) - The extended presidential term will be effective only for the next Russian president, but Medvedev can be elected again for a six-year term, the head of the Fund for Effective Politics (FEP), Gleb Pavlovsky, said.

"The six-year term of authorities cannot be applied to the current president. The law rules it out. The president receives a very important mandate in the elections, and this mandate includes its term," Pavlovsky told Interfax on Wednesday.

"It will be allowed for the next president," he said. Medvedev can become the next president, too, he said.

"I think that if Medvedev's presidency proves to be a success from the voters' view, he will hardly reject an option to run for president again," he said.

The proposal to extend the presidential term to six years, and the State Duma term to five years is not a surprise, he said.

"The change of the terms has been discussed for a long time, and it has not been done in favor of any specific person," he said.

"This (extension of terms and a separation between the presidential and parliamentary elections) is logical. The president is currently the head-of-state for 2.5-3 years, and he is the head of the election campaign headquarters in the remaining period," he said.
