Ukraine threatens Russia with unilateral land border demarcation

KYIV. Oct 24 (Interfax) - Ukraine could start the demarcation of the Ukrainian-Russian land border unilaterally, said Leonid Osavolyuk, Director of the First Territorial Department at the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry. Russia has halted the process of demarcation of the land section of the common border, which greatly facilitates illegal migration, Osavolyuk said at a briefing in Kyiv on Friday.

"We will therefore have to take measures concerning the demarcation of our border with Russia... I do not rule out a unilateral demarcation," he said.

There have already been examples of a unilateral border demarcation, in particular, Russia once started unilaterally the demarcation of its border with Estonia. "This fact has taken place, and it might be useful for Ukraine," the diplomat said.

Ukraine still hopes that Russia will resume its efforts on the demarcation of their common border, he said. "Frankly, we are running out of patience, but I think that there is a chance to see a positive decision from Russia," Osavolyuk said.

From the political point of view, there cannot be problems in the Ukrainian-Russian land border demarcation, as an agreement has already been signed and "it just has to be marked on the area," he said.

According to the Ukrainian State Border Service, the total length of the national border with Russia is 2,295.04 kilometers, including 1,974.04 kilometers on the land and 321 kilometers at sea.
