Russia Expects Resolution Of Differences In Interpretation Of Medvedev- Sarkozy Plan

MOSCOW. Sept 2 (Interfax) - Russia believes that the differences between Russia and the EU are largely caused by the differences in the interpretation of the peace treaty signed by the presidents of Russia and France.

"The conclusions (drawn at the recent EU emergency summit) reflect different interpretations of the Medvedev-Sarkozy plan composed of six points," Russian envoy to the EU Vladimir Churkin said in a televised linkup from Brussels on Tuesday.

"I am looking forward to the negotiations between the presidents Dmitry Medvedev of Russia and Nicolas Sarkozy of France. I believe all differences will be resolved," the diplomat said.

Chizhov said he believes the differences in the interpretations of the so-called Medvedev-Sarkozy plan is reduced to three things. "The first thing is that the preamble (to the treaty) was missing in the text signed by Saakashvili," said Chizhov.

Secondly, the sixth point of the treaty envisioned an international discussion of the future status of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. "Saakashvili refused, and that point was deleted because he (the Georgian leader) was not ready to even discuss that issue. I believe he has achieved his goal," said Chizhov.

Thirdly, Russia signed a document, in which the sixth point envisioned ensuring the security of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. "But for some reason, in the French text of the document (signed by Saakashvili) has the preposition 'in,'" said Chizhov. Thus, the phrase "ensuring the security of Abkhazia and South Ossetia" turned into "ensuring security in Abkhazia and South Ossetia," he said. "And that is a whole different thing!" said the diplomat.
