Medvedev Calls For More Transparency In Government Officials' Work

PETROZAVODSK. July 17 (Interfax) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has called on government officials to make their work more transparent and insisted that more information should be available to people.

"This is the most complicated issue everywhere. Nobody wants to be open," Medvedev said while talking about the need to set up a so-called 'electronic government' at a meeting with head of Karelia Sergei Katanandov.

Not only should people know where to apply to have their problems resolved but they should also have the opportunity to know the entire paperwork process, Medvedev said.

Katanandov suggested that the lack of desire among government officials to address this issue could be explained by the fact that the number of Internet users in Russia is relatively small.

However, Medvedev said he was sure that, as soon as people learn that they can use the Internet for applying to government agencies, they would ask their relatives or friends to help them do so.
