Expert Says Annual Corrupt Money Turnover in Russia At Least $300 Billion

MOSCOW. May 20 (Interfax) - Corruption has been growing in Russia in recent years, INDEM Foundation President Georgy Satarov said.

"In-depth research into corruption is not a frequent occurrence in Russia. It is a costly undertaking. The last one was conducted in 2005. But we keep monitoring the situation. Corruption has been growing since then in a favorable medium," Satarov told Interfax on Tuesday.

"Russia's annual turnover of corrupt resources is about $300 billion, in the most conservative, minimal estimate," he said.

Satarov declined to say which sector is worst blighted with corruption.

"What does not arouse doubts is that the executive branch is hit by corruption the worst. Concerning other sectors, the principle is simple: corruption is worse where larger (amounts of) money is involved," said Satarov.
