Bad Results Of SPS Is Not 'Moral Defeat' - Chubais

MOSCOW. Dec 3 (Interfax) - Member of the political council of the Union of Right Forces (SPS) and Chairman of Unified Energy System of Russia (UES) (RTS: EESR) Anatoly Chubais has admitted that the party has lost the State Duma elections, saying that this was "not a moral defeat."

"We secured bad results. The first thing that we should do is to acknowledge these results. I do not think this is a moral defeat of SPS. Facing the choice of either to continue the line given the result it will lead to or to move to a milder position, SPS did not recede from its position to any extent. It became a victim of information pressure," Chubais said at the SPS election headquarters in Moscow on Sunday.

Chubais also regretted that democratic opposition parties did not unite ahead of the elections.

"Every effort to unite was fair: it implied taking on obligations for such unification. Now it is absolutely clear that it is funny and silly for democrats to move in two or three columns in the country. This is absolutely redundant," Chubais said.

Commenting on United Russia's victory at the elections, he said: "This victory is United Russia's defeat. The amount of violations during this election campaign exceeded all imaginable limits."

"Speaking about other parties, which seem to win seats in the State Duma, the image complies with certain plots. It turns out that there is one opposition party in the Duma - (the Communist Party) KPRF. But this is the party of the past day," Chubais said.

Results should be assessed not today or tomorrow, but after four years of Duma's work, Chubais said.

"Speaking about the four year cycle of the work of the current State Duma, it becomes clear that United Russia, which according to results will become a monopolist, could decay. I am certain that the law of decaying monopolists can be equally applied to both economics and politics," Chubais said.

"Russia will relapse into the disease it was combating with for decades," Chubais said.
