Preparations for Russia's Duma elections to involve 3 mln people

MOSCOW, August 22 (RIA Novosti) - About three million people will be involved in organization work for Russia's parliamentary elections to be held on December 2, the head of the Central Election Commission said Wednesday.

Vladimir Churov told a conference with the heads of regional election commissions: "The number of active participants in the election campaign totals three million people. In effect, at least one out of every 40 voters will play an active role in the election campaign."

Churov said last Wednesday that the federal budget would allocate over 4 billion rubles (about $155 million) for elections to the lower house of parliament, the State Duma. He also said that over 107 million voters had been registered as of July 1, or 600,000 fewer than before the last parliamentary elections, in 2003.

Addressing the same conference, First Deputy Interior Minister Alexander Chekalin said around 450,000 policemen would ensure security at the elections. The official said police would block illegal propaganda, conduct checks on request of election commissions, and guard commission members and candidates.

Presidential elections will be held in March 2008, three months after elections to the 450-seat Duma.
