According to the Russian Constitution, President Vladimir Putin is due to step down in 2008, after completing his second consecutive term in office. Speculation abounds, in Moscow and elsewhere, about the possibility that Putin may try to bring about pre-term elections for the Duma and/or the presidency, or even seek a way to remain in office beyond his constitutionally-mandated term. On the basis of recent Russian media reports and personal interviews, Peter Reddaway and Donald Jensen will examine the potential scenarios for the Russian political succession.

Peter Reddaway is an Emeritus Professor of Political Science & International Affairs at George Washington University and a member of its Institute for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies, specializing in contemporary Russian politics. In 2004, George Washington University awarded him its annual prize for outstanding research by a faculty member. Reddaway is the author, co-author, or editor of several books, two of which have won awards, and of articles that have appeared in academic journals and newspapers including "The New York Times" and "The Washington Post." Donald N. Jensen has been RFE/RL's Director of Communications since June 2002. Prior to assuming his current duties, Jensen served for six years as Associate Director of Broadcasting. Before joining RFE/RL, he spent 12 years as a political officer in the US Department of State, serving at US Embassies in Sofia and Moscow. Jensen, who has just returned from a post-G8 visit to Moscow, has written extensively on Russian politics and foreign policy, especially the politics of Russian business.
